I am testing this out and adding areas that can be used to set placement of blocks.

I implemented this feature for Nitobe. Take a look at how its template.php and page.tpl.php work. That might give you some ideas.

I'm excited to have access to CVS now, so I can take care of this. My goal is to iron out the bugs and issues and then think about bigger things, like mobile browser view, mootools and jquery based image display options, and setting up a Drupal 7-dev test site for upgrading the theme to 7.0 compatibility.
