5.x-2.0 seems to require jquery_update. Many sites do not have jquery_update installed. Any chance to backport?

No. Many plugins require this jQuery version.

Aside of that, all development efforts go into the new 3.x branch from now on.

Then you should mark D5 1.x as "also available" for all who do not like or can install jquery_update, but are fine with a version that works well with FCK/TinyMCE.

Only to note - I have no module running that requires the jquery_update... I'm not aware of any other module that requires me to update - except lightbox2 if I would use it.
