I have increased the sidebar size in order to accommodate two tabs however on changing the text, one of the tabs is above the other again. I can not afford to increase the size of the sidebar further as the middle content will be too small.

I would appreciate it if someone could tell me how to reduce / perhaps theme the size of the text and tabs down so that they fit as I wish

this is simple CSS

Try Firebug, that addon could tell you which css selector you need to change..
