If you send an invitation to join a group to a user who already has a CivicSpace account, the user will receive the following error message when trying to subscribe to the group using the subscribe URL provided:

Access denied
You are not authorized to access this page.

See this subscription link for an ex:

http://beta.ironweedfilms.com/?q=/invite/3504/94/vic3NXVNhe/1

The same issue will occur if the user logs into the site and clicks the URL from their private message inbox

I believe, however, that the URL will work if you send the invitation to an anonymous user, but then you will run into defect 49239

http://drupal.org/node/49239

In this case the new user is not auto-subscribed to the group upon clicking the URL; she is just registered as a GJG user..

Assigning this to myself; this one will probably be more involved to track down so will start troubleshooting this first thing in the morning.

Since the exposure of this defect is lower (someone who invites others to join a group as a member would have to enter an email address that is already site registered) we decided to defer this one..
