If we are already using javascript to do some useful menu navigation at the top of the window. I thought it might also be nice to also have non-vital messages close after X amount of time. Maybe 3-5 seconds. Errors and Warnings could stay, or allow users to close them.

This kind of effect would gracefully degrade to what we have now.

I feel it would help move the interface to an application like feel at almost no cost.

I like this idea and it will be good to see how people react to it (my gut tells me it will need some tweaking as different modules use status messages differently.)

Count it as on my list for after the 1.0 release cycle stabilizes.
