Please... Someone... Please... Help...

I have been having major reliability problems with my host.
I want to move to a new host, one that seems to have much more positive feedback and known reliability.
I have moved all my registered domains from various registrars to GoDaddy.
Unfortuanately their Control Panel is not what I am used to, and am missing the "Fantastico > Install Drupal" quick links...

HOW can I successfully move my Drupal site from > http://hobywa.org < to a whole new server?

(1) Backup the MySQL file
- what are the specifics?; drop the file (save a local copy); done that.

(2) Installing Drupal on GoDaddy, is this possible?

(3) Do I need to have the site hosted elsewhere, and use my $3.95/mo GoDaddy 5 GB Space/250 GB Transfer Bandwidth for my files that will ultimately (hopefully) be Video, Audio, Pictures for an interactive podcasting AtomFilms (pre-Macromedia purchase) meets, iFilm, meets something else.

(3b) Is there a US-based host that has PHP, MySQL, ++Space, ++Bandwidth that is more Drupal-friendly than GoDaddy? That is near equal in price?

I want to develop a site that is very 'grass roots' oriented about youth leadership, youth perspectives, youth solutions to world problems, etc. The site isn't what I want it to be yet, but soon I'll have more time to dedicate to it. Please help me get over this hurdle right now.

RE 1: use phpMyAdmin and do a db dump of the database of your existing site. Also, use your ftp client and download the entire codebase of your existing install

RE 2: Avoid GoDaddy -- they are not particularly Drupal friendly.

RE 3: You can try Site5, WebHostFreaks, or OpensourceHost. Alternatively, use google to search Drupal.org for any of the various hosting threads: "web hosting site:drupal.org"

RE 3, take 2: Depending on how much Audio/Video you will use, shared hosting might not do it for you. You might need to consider a Virtual Private Server or a Dedicated/Managed Server to serve a lot of media content.

I've used Siteground before. Their customer service was real good and they use Cpanel and Fantastico. I never had any problem setting up Drupal with their service.

Recently I moved over to Hostgator, which also uses Cpanel and Fantastico. I've set up Drupal 4.6.5 using Fantastico and it worked just fine. I've also set up Drupal 4.7 beta4 on a couple domains using Hostgator. I know they have one package for about $10 with unlimited domains.

I used to use GoDaddy for my registrar services, but am now using enom. They seem to be able to propagate DNS much faster than GoDaddy. Usually in about 20 minutes or so.

I've had terrible, awful, horrid experiences with enom resellers, mostly RegisterFly. eNom doesn't seem interested at all in helping to solve the problems. It might be different when working with eNom but please do a lot of checking before taking that leap. (And do a search or two as I'm far from the only one who has written about it.)

While GoDaddy lacks some of the things I liked (like wildcard DNS), they are much more reliable and I've always had DNS changes propagate in 10-15 minutes in most cases.

Avoid GoDaddy's web hosting. Their domain registration services are good, and I've bought/registered several domains through them with no problems.

I wrote some tips at http://drupal.org/node/46904 for moving a site with minimal downtime. But if your site is mostly static, most of that may be moot.

As for matching GoDaddy's price ... well, you get what you pay for, mostly. GoDaddy can afford to sell hosting at rock-bottom prices because they skimp on customer service. If you need more assistance, you pay for it.

My employer sells a hosting package with unlimited domains and unlimited email addresses for $25/month Cdn (about US$21). How? Traffic limits with overage fees. Works great for small companies, web designers, etc. We don't get companies who want to host just one site -- they see $3.95/month at GoDaddy and decide to take their chances.

Nothing is free. If it seems too good to be true, it's probably a gimmick.

Yep registerfly's domain registration processes SUCK! In the process of registering with them on four occasions, they have managed to overcharge me three times!!!!! like this; if you register three domains at once, the app will come back and say all three are available and bill you, then you get an email later to say that two failed, but they still bill you for all three and you have to raise a support issue to get them unwound. The email trail is a shambles of uncross-referenced nonsense. i smell a scam here. I just marvel that it has taken me this long to learn. Stay away. At best they are incompetent.
