The Panels module allows a site administrator to create customized layouts for multiple uses. At its core it is a drag and drop content manager that lets you visually design a layout and place content within that layout.

Panels 3 is the most recent version of Panels, and is a significant advance over Panels 2, although its user interface is similar. A non-final release of Panels 3 is available for Drupal 7.

Panels 3 is not yet documented in detail, but much of the Panels 2 documentation (except for the API details) should still apply. Many useful Panels videos have been created by Drupal community members.

Panels 2 for Drupal 6 is deprecated. See Upgrading from Panels 2 to Panels 3 if you are currently using Panels 2 on Drupal 6.

Some docs

I've written a few things. I had planned to turn them into actual d.o docs but haven't had time. I'll link to them for now:

Thanks for sharing Amitaibu :) I have added your tutorial to the Panels 3 tutorials at http://drupal.org/node/946468

Another article

Here is an article that I wrote from developer's perspective as an attempt to summarize the main concepts of Panels 3 and the module's ties to Chaos Tools. http://plosquare.blogspot.com/2011/01/surface-drilling-drupal-panels-3.html

Unexpected navigation

The navigation in the panels pages is really not what I would expect.

  • When viewing the panel, there are 2 tabs: View and Edit Panel. This would suggest that when you click Edit panel, the tabs should remain, and the selection switch to Edit panel (that's how tabs usually work!). In this module, the tabs disappear, and you don't know how to go back!
Suggestion: either put the tabs on both view and edit page, or replace the tabs in the view by an Edit this page link or icon.
  • Once I am editing the panel, the breadcrumbs show: Home > Administer > Site building > Pages. Clicking on Pages shows a list of pages - little to do with Panels, if I understand correctly.

Suggestion: put a link to the Panels main page in Breadcrumbs (by Panels main page , meaning where you get Node panels - Minipanels, etc).
