Issue Summary

Hi all, I've been reworking Notifications UI for a project and have some work I can offer. The project needed a straight forward solution for users so my task was to essentially to 'dum down' the wordy and complex system. We did this doing the following:

1. Customized the subscription link text to explicitly explain its functionality (ex: "Email me comments for this post"). We are doing this in the code but it could easily be taken from an admin setting.

2. We bypass the notifications/subscribe screen by simply subscribing them with the default Interval and Sending method. As an added bonus I wrote some javascript that handles this without a page reload.

So if there is interest, item 1 would just be a nice feature to have and item 2 would be a 'Simple Mode' option that admins can check in the Notifications UI admin.

Lastly, when you are subscribed to a group and are viewing content inside that group and you see 'Subcribe to: This post', the fact that you are subscribed to that post via the group subscription is very confusing for users (it took me a long time to figure out at least :-P) I understand that it's not 'wrong' because you don't have a subscription to that actual node, but... Where do we draw the line on usability? I'm patching my Notifications UI module today to say something to the effect of "Subscribed to comments on this post via you Group Subscription"... I'm going to have to work on cutting that wordiness down ;)

Be really great to see some usability simpliflexification improvements like these on the 6.x branch as well - think that might be of value to others? Is there another thread somewhere on usability? I've been looking...

Along these lines: users hugely confused by the plethora of "Content type in group" subscriptions, help desk begging for a single group subscription. (One of them even sent me the attached image - you gotta admit, it's a pretty 'sharp' critique.)

I'm not enough of a php coder to be of much use in real development, but glad to help with front-end and testing. I will also ask if our group could spring for a bounty.

Seems no progress from time ago. Also we are fixing only critical bugs for 5.x.

About UI improvements, add-on modules providing a simpler UI are welcomed.
