Right now this part of the menu only shows two numbers; it would be great if a jQuery-based hovering panel would pop up to show who these users are (up to a reasonable maximum number of users for heavily-trafficked sites).

Sorry, but that won't work out. You can have hundreds or even thousands of users being online on a site.

That's why there is a default limit proposed to see the most recent. This way the module will be useful as wellf or smaller sites. We're already testing that in prod and will post a patch soon.

This is

1) either a missing Drupal core feature

2) or functionality for a dedicated contributed module
