I couldnt really get the unswer from what have been said here.
Ans so, what about field groups tabs? when entering a cck with groups this is tha message displaying in the vertical collapse:

The selected fieldsets will be rendered as vertical tabs for this content type. The tabs are rendered in the same version as the original form's fieldsets

yes there is. You need the fieldgroup cck installed. On the manage fields screen for the content type, add a group, then the fields you want in that group you place as children of the group. Each group will be its own tab in vertical tabs. Also note there is an order issue for the order of the field dont get displayed in the order you set them on the manage fields screen. Luckily quicksketch has made a patch to fix this. I have tried the patch vs. the beta 3 release and works fine. should also work against beta2 but i have not tried this. The patch can be found here:
