which HOSTING service that allows user to modify php.ini and run customized scripts, like ffMPEG?
I know that most of dedicated server and virtual server can do it, but is there any shared host that allows php.ini access and run customized scripts?

Check out micfo

Very responsive tech department. Took them fifteen minutes to resolve a shell access issue for me at 3 o'clock in the morning. I run eight sites with them, and am very happy so far. It'll cost you about ten bucks a month plus a one-time 20 buck setup fee.

Modifying php.ini

I know BlueHost (bluehost.com) supports custom php.ini files, and you can probably find others with a Google search.

mod. phpl.ini yes /// add customized scripts, like ffMPEG NO

ffMPEG is "too server-intensive" says their help on bluehost. consider using www.imagemagick.org instead they say.

ffMPEG is server intensive.

VeryMisunderstood - January 27, 2007 - 06:19

ffMPEG is server intensive. However, typically if you can get Shell Access to a server you can compile the binaries.
Thus you should be asking hosts if they allow Shell Access.

If you abuse a shared host though, using a binary they will shut you off. So be careful what you do with ffMPEG

Site5.com allows this.

FFMPEG

bluehost states its not supported for them to install it.
i installed it temporarily (gone now) after finding a linux binary and used it in Gallery2 just fine!
(thanks for the tip on using binaries and getting cut off though! =) )
Gallery2 asks for the path to binary and after completing that it is no problem.
that was done without shell access. to build your own ffmpeg you need shell...

The precompiled binary that

VeryMisunderstood - March 1, 2007 - 01:10

The precompiled binary that was offered by the Gallery2 forum, had certain features that the hosts don't like. ie: ffmpeg server. There aren't many precompiled binaries around. But yes, if you found a precompiled binary for your specific hosts server set up, it would work just as the one for did in Gallery.

run that by me again....what did you do to make gallerry 2 work?

how would you modify php.ini

vitovonantwon - March 24, 2008 - 13:18

Hi,

What would you put in the php.ini to make ffmpeg work. The path to ffmpeg?
I use cirtex hosting, the problem I ran into is they don't five you access to the /usr/bin/ffmpeg.
I havn't figured out how to get it to work.
They offer a script to get phpmotion installed easily, this uses ffmpeg, and uses it's path for ffmpeg as /usr/bin/ffmpeg
So far I havn't been able to figure out how phpmotion got the path right.

I've been using the video module and the ffmpeg helper doesn't find the path.

check with your hosts support channels or your hosts knowledge base.

If they offer FFMPEG, there should be some documentation there.

php.ini and FFMPEG don't have anything to do with each other.

I don't think any shared hosting provider will allow you to modify php.ini, except some variables available to be set in .htaccess like upload_max_filesize, exec time and so on.

As for FFmpeg hosting check out this list:

http://www.ffmpeg-hosting.com/

Try IX Webhosting or Apthost, both are pretty good.
