CCK field permissions doesnt show edit tab?

I'm trying to allow users to edit one certain field of my nodes but I cant get CCK Field Permissions to show the edit tab to users. I tried giving users edit permission over my nodes but that lets them edit everything, not just the one field.
Is there something I'm missing?

afaik that's the way it's supposed to work-- the user needs to be able to edit the node before they can edit individual fields in the node. To do what you want you'll have to setup everything on the node to be a field, give them access to edit the node, then control which fields they have access to. It's extra work, but it should be doable.

Node Perms override CCK Perms
using the Audio module BTW,
ok so CCK Field Perms allows me to add "File Info" but now the problem is that all the default fields of the nodes are not editable in the field manager. giving users node permissions overrides CCK field permissions of File Info.
might be a dead end here
