Hosting directory and advertising policy

Last modified: July 8, 2009 - 05:06

Drupal.org has scope for advertising your hosting company or Drupal book. The main page for hosting companies is the Hosting directory. The main page for Drupal publications is the Books page.

This document is an FAQ about the advertising on Drupal.org.

What about professional services and training?

The services and training pages are managed by the community through the public issue queues. For more information, and how to get listed, please consult those pages.

Where is advertising shown on drupal.org?

A directory list of hosting companies is maintained in the hosting area of the drupal.org handbook.

We also promote a small number of hosting products to banner ads which you may see in the Hosting support forums.

Drupal.org is a very important resource for users and developers and so we aim to keep advertising contextual, relevant, and useful. There are no plans to increase banner/sidebar advertising before the Drupal.org redesign.

Who manages listings and the hosting forum?

The hosting and book directories are managed by Kieran Lal, Simon Hobbs (Hosting) , and Dean Myerson (Book Ads).

The hosting support forum is managed by Tresler, VeryMisunderstood, and Silverwing.

Are these companies endorsed?

No companies are endorsed by the Drupal Association or Drupal.org. All reviews you may read on Drupal.org are the opinions of the individual authors.

How do I get listed on the hosting page?

To be listed on this page create an account on the Drupal Association and use the contact form with the hosting category to indicate that you would like to be listed.

When submitting your request, please consider these other additional steps. We reserve the right to take these factors into consideration when placing your link on Drupal.org.

  • When providing a link to your site, we highly recommend that the landing page indicates your ability to support Drupal. For hosting, we request a reference to the fact that you support the installation of Drupal and PHP 5.2.
  • We highly recommend that you have an affiliate system in place. See the Affiliate software section below.
  • Purchase a Drupal Association membership, which can be done by creating an account on the Drupal Association and following the instructions.

Finally it should be noted that companies listed on Drupal.org may be contacted to provide support to the Drupal Association and its activities such as events and fund raising drives.

What is Affiliate software?

We prefer that hosting links are affiliate links. If you make a sale then the Drupal Association benefits financially.

If your site uses Drupal, you could try installing Ubercart package with the UC Affiliate 2 module. A non-Drupal affiliate software package that many hosting companies use is iDevAffiliate.

Once you've set up your software, create an affiliate account for Drupal Association, then provide us with the login details when you submit your request for listing in the hosting directory.

How do you decide where to place links? Who gets a banner ad?

We will organize hosting directory links to maximize the return to the Drupal Association. Drupal books are generally organized by release date and availability.

We will run banner ads for hosting companies only. Since banner ads are more visible. We review all banner advertisers before listing. We require a rating from the Better Business Bureau. We also consider general reviews, and potential for affiliate income before placing a banner ad in rotation.

Can I list my book?

On Drupal.org you can find a list of Drupal-related publications on the books page.

We will usually list all published books, using an affiliate link that gives financial benefit to the Drupal Association. If you know of a book that you think should be listed, please edit this page with the relevant details.

How should I report problems with a listed hosting company or book?

We understand that, while a listing does not mean an endorsement, there is the potential to mislead users into purchasing services from poor quality companies. It's very important to research these companies yourself before committing to any services.

If you have a complaint about any company that is listed, we would like you to contact us through the Drupal Association contact form, in addition to any other forum you decide to start a discussion in.

Do you publish Drupal Association affiliate income?

Periodically we will announce how much income the Drupal Association has earned. See the Drupal association 2009 budget for details. We are not able to provide detailed break-downs of this income, as this often contravenes our affiliate agreements with listed companies.
