How to attach uploaded files to a node?

In setting up a Drupal 6 based Intranet server I have to deal with lots of files that have to be made available through Drupal.
It is not really feasible to manually upload each attachment one by one from the node edit page, hence I'm trying to find a way to "bulk attach" files to nodes so they appear as attachments for a specific node.
How can this be done?
