child menu automatically showing when logging out

Hi I'm a newbie. I've created a parent menu with a child menu. The problem is that when I log out the parent menu automatically expands to show the child menu. I only want the child menu to show when people click onto the parent menu. When people view any other menu not related to this parent menu I want it to close again. I have also downloaded the DHTML menu which has not helped my problem. Please help.
