For now, the invalid markup I see is the following:
Attribute "counter" is not a valid attribute. Did you mean "content"?
…cript:cutemenu_mouseout();" counter="0">

I've checked both cutemenu.module and cutemenu.js and neither contain any reference to this attribute as far as I can see. Can it simply be removed?

That was for debug purposes. It is not in the -dev version. Could you try the -dev from Jul 22, 2009 and let me know what you see?
