Issue Summary
I have over 100 users and am trying to send mass contact emails to as BCC. Seems there is still a problem with the SMTP module. Have downloaded latest versions of both Mass Contact and SMTP. I hope there is a way to resolve this as it is a neat way of keeping site members informed.
I have to use the SMTP, unfortunately, wish I had another choice.
Any Suggestions, log form Smtp below .. Emails never turn up, so I guess SMTP is just dropping them

By the way, the MAss_Contact Module does list all the users after the send, so it is seeing them all correctly by all appearances Cheers

As a suggestion, can this be set to send the emails one by one, obviously turning off the send email to sender. If this was done, then the need for BCC is removed. Perhaps a option to break emails into individuals?
It is inefficient, but we can live with it twice a month, the rest of the module is perfect for Drupal Integration ..
Cheers

I'm not sure why you're not receiving them, but based on your debugging output:
SMTP -> get_lines(): $str is "250 2.6.0 <107cf7450104f5713d9088c9800a608f@cila.biz> Queued mail for delivery "SMTP -> get_lines(): $data is "250 2.6.0 <107cf7450104f5713d9088c9800a608f@cila.biz> Queued mail for delivery "
SMTP -> FROM SERVER:250 2.6.0 <107cf7450104f5713d9088c9800a608f@cila.biz> Queued mail for delivery
and
SMTP -> get_lines(): $str is "250 2.6.0 Queued mail for delivery "SMTP -> get_lines(): $data is "250 2.6.0 Queued mail for delivery "
SMTP -> FROM SERVER:250 2.6.0 Queued mail for delivery
they appear to be getting to the mail server.
When I do tests using the same versions of the same modules, they come through for me.
If you want to send each one individually, go to
admin/build/mass_contact/settingsand setMaximum number of recipients before splitting up the e-mailto1.BTW, did you want those e-mail addresses in that report? This is a heavily scrapped site.

I am no expert, but should there be more than 100 of them. I am not sure how the bccs show up in this log. There were two Categories selected. One of the BCC's was my Ymail Account and it did not show up in the Spam or Inbox. If you mark the send copy to sender that one shows up ok.
Ok on the suggestion to split out by choosing one. Should have thought of that myself :) Cannot see the wood for the trees.
Thanks for responding, much appreciated. Good point on the email address, ooops ..
Cheers
Mark

I will try sending again and see what I get with a smaller subset, since yours works. Will also try direct with me server to see if it pays attention to the BCC's as well. Thanks

Do you know how to remove the email addresses form the posts? Sorry ..
#7
Ok, I set it to one and it worked like a charm, except for the way the email was delivered to my Gmail Account .. (See below)

Mark,
In reply to your comment #4,
There will only be as many as the number of categories you send to. In your case, 2. The recipients are sent as a list to each category, and then the e-mail server takes care splitting out that list and sending the message to the appropriate addresses.
I'm sorry, but I don't know why you're not getting the message. It would be nice to see the mail server's logs of those transmissions, but I know we don't have access to them.
In reply to your comment #6,
I believe the only way to do it is to create a new issue to the drupal.org webmasters and point them to this issue:
http://drupal.org/node/add/project-issue/webmasters
In reply to your comment #8,
Are you saying that the body of the message has all that text in it? It shouldn't, and my tests to Gmail, Yahoo, AIM and Hotmail all showed the message as expected.
Are you sure you don't have another module that's interfering with your e-mail transmissions?

Hi Oadaeh, re Comment 9, yep, that was the actual email received form Gmail. I just cut and paste. As far as I know I do not have anything other than the SMTP Auth there. I will look around, only thing I can think of was email verify and the Drupal Core stuff that sends emails.

I have problems with headers appearing inside the mail as well.
Using
mass_contact 6.x-1.x-dev
SMTP Authentication Support 6.x-1.0-beta3
Drupal 6.13
The problem seems to appear when attaching files. I've patched the module with the patch from this thread: http://drupal.org/node/473838
Attached is the source of a mail showing the problem. It seems to be some unessecary header being added during compilation of the mail.

I recently extensively modified how MIME and attachments work in this module. If you are still using Mass Contact, you might try updating to the latest development release and see if your problems still exist. I will be creating a point release soon, but I want to wait a bit to make sure there are no bugs found.

I think some of these issues may be related to how gmail (in particular) aggressively tries to limit spam. Having said that, I do think there may be some differences in how the MIME is assembled that may help. Allow me to describe some of my findings.
First of all, I'm using the PHPMailer to send via the Microsoft Online SMTP server, which is where some company email is hosted. I mention this to point out that it's a well-known SMTP server and not some small one that might be blacklisted.
I have found that sending an html email using the bcc option never gets through to gmail recipients. When I say never gets through, I mean that it doesn't even show up in the spam folder. It simply never shows up. However, that same email is seen by some other corporate email clients. I can send plain text emails and use the bcc option and sometimes it gets through. If I set the "Maximum number of recipients" to 1, and then turn off the bcc option, then html and plan text emails all get through to gmail recipients. However, gmail & yahoo recipients don't see any of the html formatting. They appear to strip the html formatting, even though they deliver it.
I then tried sending the same emails through the same SMTP server using the Outlook Webmail client. When I send an HTML email, bcc'ing gmail recipients, the email still got through. This tells me that gmail is seeing something different about other header information or about how the MIME content is assembled and is blocking it. I should note that these emails never even show up in the spam folder.
Given the consistent differences in whether an email gets delivered when sent from mass_contact or a normal email client (via the same major SMTP server), I feel it's fair to say that something can potentially be improved. Unfortunately I don't know what that is, and I'm sure it's not easy.
Lastly, I did just pull down the latest dev branch and use it since you said you'd made some changes there. It didn't appear to change whether or not emails were delivered to gmail/yahoo/corporate recipients.

@carteriii: try sending one of the messages that never gets through to Gmail to somewhere else that does get through, then check the headers of that message to see what is listed for "X-Mailer". If it is "Drupal" (which it should be), try commenting out the following line:
<?php'X-Mailer' => 'Drupal'
?>
of the drupal_mail() function (about line 102) in /includes/mail.inc and/or of the _mass_contact_mail() function (about line 2023) in mass_contact.module. Then send the message again to Gmail and see if you get different results.

I did see the 'Drupal' X-Mailer header, as well as another X-Mailer for the PHPMailer with its version number. I ran a few tests with each removed individually and both removed entirely and did not see a difference. Gmail seems to hate bcc'ed email by default, unless they see something specific which leads them to believe it's legit.

Okay. I wanted to see if maybe that was your problem, as some people have complained about that before.
Personally, I don't have the problem you do. I test using both standard Drupal behavior, and the SMTP Authentication Support module (which uses PHPMailer to send it's messages), by sending e-mails to accounts on Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, AIM, and standard mail POP3 mail servers, with and w/o BCC.
Do you have any other mail based modules enabled on your site?
