How to display images and related text in dynamic content area

Sorry if this is in the wrong area.
I have been asked to set up something where users can upload photos and a description of the photo, but I would like to display the images in a thumbnail gallery, and when you hover over them, the teaser is displayed in a separate text area.
There are so many gallery modules out there, but I'm not sure that I have found one that would work. Or, is there an approach using CCK/Views or Image Module/Views that would work? Have seen the http://drupal.org/project/ddblock module, but it's for 6. I'm not sure if I'm in a good place to upgrade right now, and "the powers that be" would like this up sooner.
Can anyone give me some advice to get me started?

You might checkout the http://drupal.org/project/views_slideshow module -- it has a d5 version and works pretty well.
