I'm not sure if this is by design or if it's supported and I just didn't figure out how to get it to work.

I'm not seeing the Any option pop up in the list of terms for my exposed Taxonomy: Term multi-select filter when I check Optional. It does show up when Force single is checked, but I need it for the multi-select variant. Here are the settings:

Operator: is one of
Select terms from vocabulary ____: nothing selected (Any not present)
and only Optional is checked.

I did see this thread but deleting and recreating the filter didn't help.

With a multi select, you get 'Any' by deselecting all options, so an explicit 'Any' isn't actually required.

I disagree strongly -- for 2 reasons.

(1) A technician or technically knowledgeable user will try the method selecting all options on their own. A non-technical user may not and will likely find it confusing in any case.

So even if this were an adequate solution, it would require on-page explanation of some sort. Unappealing, at best.

(2) Unfortunately it is not an adequate solution.

Once you have selected from a multi-select, there is no way to un-select and clear it. (even a simple page refresh <F5> doesn't work, it needs a <ctl-F5> ... again, non-obvious to the non-technical)

However, when using taxonomy terms in such a select list there is another problem. On non-required taxonomy vocabularies, many nodes will not be associated with ANY term in a given vocab at all.

So a selection of all terms is inappropriate and can return partial or even no results ... in other words inaccurate and inadequate results.

At the least you need a way to say none as opposed to all, but really you need an ANY operator, just as the first post above points out.

----------

Lacking both an un-select mechanism and an <ANY> option, multi-selects on taxonomy terms are effectively unusable for normal public facing applications.

This issue really does need to be addressed.

Thanks for reading.

Look, I cant figure out how to deselect, and I am sure my site users also can not figure it out. The exposed filters are set to optional... but if you select one of the exposed filters there is no way to deselct it. One of the exposed filters is always highlighted. HOW TO UN-Hilight it?

Please tell me!?!

And if you can please tell me how to allow an Any for an option. This is a very important issue.

Ok I am dyinbg from workign so hard on the other issue. Sorry to sound stressed out. I will simply add on the site for users they have to hold down C+trl and click to select none/Deselect. I am sorry UI am so sstupid to have missed that. I know hold down ctrl helps to multiselect.
Sorry.

I agree. An option is clearer for non-technical users ( deselecting is not intuitive ).

Of course, but average people don't even know what a 'browser' is (www.whatbrowser.org), so we should definitely add an 'Any' option. People simply don't understand how to de-select, you'd have to sit right next to them and teach them how to do it.
