I've searched high and low and been unable to find where to set how long an item should have the "new" or "updated" flag next to it's title in listings.

By that cryptic message ;-) I take it to mean that the setting should be found in "My Account" settings. Couldn't find it there, either.
Or did I misinterpret your message.
