Is there a way to make the forums a little more visually appealing? Is there any way to style them?
Thanks for your help!

I'm dealing with the same
I'm dealing with the same thing at the moment, haven't looked yet but I think you can style the tpl files within the forum module (or do an override)
Forum Modules
Try these modules they might be what you are looking for...

I wrote a few examples of nice looking Drupal-based forums the other day. I also included a few screenshots of the forum I'm currently working on styling. There are templates available for just about every aspect of the forum, and theming them is similar to theming any other part of Drupal. Ultimately it is a lot more CSS than anything else to be done (unless you have a need to edit the HTML). It's a bit of work (though I'm sure making a custom theme for any forum takes effort), though it can be great :) As mentioned there are templates in the forum module's directory that you can copy to your theme and modify... or you can try out Advanced Forum module. The forum topics themselves are nodes (and use a node template) and the replies are comments (and use a comment template).

Not in AF
Just to clarify, AF uses the same template file for all posts, whether they are nodes or comments.

I'm looking for folks to help me out by posting in my Coulee Region forums. You don't need to live in the area; there's plenty of general forums. But please, no Drupal support questions. :)
