[[DRUPAL.ORG WEBMASTERS: This is adapted from the blog post at http://tomgeller.com/content/drupal-6-online-presentation-data-video-ser... . I can rewrite it further if you like. --Tom]]
On 30 June, online video provider Lynda.com released a new six-hour video series, "Drupal 6: Online Presentation of Data". You can check it out with a free one-day pass; it's also available to anyone with a Lynda.com subscription, which starts at $25/month.
The course covers calendars, mapping, charting, and preparing data for tabular export, all built on a foundation of CCK and Views. Since Lynda.com's audience is mostly graphic designers, the course also includes clarification about how to plan data structures. Extra bonus: For giggles, check out the Introduction video, which includes some live-action video of the author looking goofy. :)
One wag in IRC questioned the need for such a course. "Presentation of Data?," he said. "Isn't that what Drupal does anyway?" He's right -- in the same way that a car is a tool for going shopping. But I believe that many people who would benefit from Drupal's data-presentation features simply don't know about them, because their knowledge of it stops at Stories, Pages, users, and blocks. They need a bit more information to make the leap, and could become fierce advocates for Drupal when they see all it can do in this area.

gdemetHi Tom -
Can you post this in the News and Announcements forum, and add it to the Front Page Schedule? Thanks!

tgeller commentedSorry -- I misunderstood the procedure. I've added the node in the correct place and changed the front page schedule page. (The image is still hosted here, however.)
Thanks!

gdemetThanks Tom, I know the current procedure for promoting material to the home page isn't as streamlined as it could be, and I hope we can change that in the near future.
If no one else has any objections, I'd propose to promote this story toward the end of next week. It's a little different from the kind of stories that usually get front page promotion, but given what a household name Lynda.com is among the interactive design community, I think this is a great way of demonstrating to designers the kind of material that's available for those looking to learn more about how to work with Drupal.

webchickI don't have a problem promoting this; the first Lynda.com DVD announcement was also on the front page. It's inline with book announcements, etc.

gdemetHi Tom -
I've added this to the schedule for promotion on July 9; since there's not much material in the front page story pipeline right now, I'm trying to keep stories spaced out about a week apart.
