I think you might have uploaded the Drupal files with FTP and had "ascii" chosen as mode of transfer. You should chose "binary".

I've checked and I uploaded the files in "binary" mode.

Any comments are welcome.

The problem described for me in this post was resolved with the Drupal 4.7 beta 5.
