I'm getting these errors in my admin section of drupal that im unsure i can fix. could someone clarify if i can fix these or will my hosting provider have too?

First error:

HTTP request status Fails
Your system or network configuration does not allow Drupal to access web pages, resulting in reduced functionality. This could be due to your webserver configuration or PHP settings, and should be resolved in order to download information about available updates, fetch aggregator feeds, sign in via OpenID, or use other network-dependent services.

Second error:

Unicode library Standard PHP
Operations on Unicode strings are emulated on a best-effort basis. Install the PHP mbstring extension for improved Unicode support.

Thank you very much in advance.

Both errors sound like your

Both errors sound like your host configuration is fairly restrictive. I have never seen the first error before, but i would guess that you are not able to make http requests via your website. This is probably a security setting configured by your host, but as i say, I have never encountered this in a host. Drupal may on occasion contact an external website, usually to download some xml, in order to enable functionality such as update status. Would be nice to have this but, depending upon your requirements, it may not be necessary.

The second refers to a php module mbstring
http://au.php.net/manual/en/mbstring.installation.php

This should be enabled to deal correctly with certain character encodings. I don't think you can configure it at runtime via your settings file, i think it needs to be done by your host.

Contact them, but sounds like they might not be the best environment for hosting drupal

agreed
