Hi,
I have been playing around with Drupal for a few months now. I have a few simple sites up and running and I am slowly getting the basics under my belt such as CCK and Views etc...
On the whole, my Drupal experience has been positive and some of the difficult things eventually turn out quite simple, once you have successfully done them once.
I realise that by continuing my Drupal learning I should reap the benefits in the months and years to come.
However I have a question regarding Drupal versus Wordpress for blogging:
I have never really gotten into blogging and now there is a requirement for us to create a few blogging type websites. Most ordinary mortals seem to use Wordpress for this. I dabbled with it a while ago and it seemed ok.
Now that I have come through the initial drupal learning curve, I am wondering if I shouldn't just start my blogs using Drupal instead of Wordpress.
Do you think doing them using Drupal will offer any advantages long-term versus using Wordpress?
If anyone has any thoughts on the benefits or not of using Drupal for this, then please let me know.
Thanks,
Sam

I think Wordpress is really good for blogging site :)

Drupal will support your blogging needs and should the sites need additional functionality down the road Drupal should be able to support those needs.
Long term vs. short term
While WP is a great blogging platform, it seems that you´ve started investing time into using & learning Drupal. So it becomes a question of long-term vs. short-term work & benefits. If you have a webdev shop, it will definitely not hurt to also have WP skills in case future clients specifically request it. If it was me, though, I´d do it in Drupal since the best way to learn anything is by doing it.
hope that helps.

I agree with nevets...unless the site is going to be developed further (i.e. beyond just a blogging type site with minimum additional functionality) then go for wordpress, it is quick and easy to set up and you should have a blog going in no time!
Just my thoughts though...

I think you mean devenderdagar (not nevets) :)

Haha i was meaning in the sense that drupal is much more powerful and can be used down the line for further development needs...kind of skimmed over this and must not have read it right! :p
But so that i'm clear go for wordpress (as devenderdagar (not nevets)) had said if you are wanting a simple blog. For anything much more than this...or if you expect the site to expand in order to develop further functionality in the future then i would suggest drupal.

I think I will stick to Drupal.
Now that I know the basics, following my research, it seems to me that there is no reason to use Wordpress.
Then if I do want to develop beyond just a blog, drupal obviously has many advantages.
I can't see a reason not to use drupal, unless I am missing something. Am I?

Was really just for ease of use that I was referring to, Wordpress is so simple to get a blog up and running, while Drupal is also simple to get it set up, you may have a wee bit more tweaking to do. If you are comfortable with Drupal then by all means go ahead and use it though!
The only other benefit to using Wordpress, as was previously mentioned I think, is that if you are working for a web dev. company or something it would be good to add another string to your bow and be able to offer development on an additional platform...
Allan
no you are not
I would say that it is more difficult in drupal to construct content types in order to post media while in wordpress is a piece of cake. However, upgrading in Wordpress is a real pain while in drupal is easier. I would go for Drupal just because wordpress is difficult to upgrade !
Recent experience from a casual user of both
Note: I posted this in another thread, but I think it is also appropriate here.
I have used Drupal, I am now trying Wordpress 2.8.4 (latest version, as of this post).
I am using 2.8.4 because of serious security issues with previous versions. I did a little research, seems that wp security is a huge issue. Some argue that wp is insecure by design.
One feature I liked about wp, is being able to add a plugin from the site, no need for the cli, ssh, ftp, unzipping, or loading the files in the correct directory - or so I thought. Problem is: wp often require me to hack the source the code of new a pluggin - i.e. install some small bit of PHP. I can edit the files from the site, but unless the permissions are very open, I can not save the files. And considering wp's security issues, I am not sure if I want the file permissions to be that open, so it's right back to the command line. BTW: I thought wp prided itself on the user not needing to be a developer, but I never had to hack source code with drupal.
The most frustrating thing to me, however, is that practically none of the plugins work, and some of the plugins break other plugins, and I am not getting much help from the wp community. I suppose the issue is largely due to 2.8.4 being so new - still.
Still, I am getting the idea that wp is not very secure, and not very robust (i.e. breaks easily). I don't want to jump to conclusions, but after trying to build a simple family site, for a about a week now, I am getting frustrated with wp.
