mamp to lamp, eleven2 hosting, having problems ironing out the kinks, newbe

I have a working site in mamp environment, and I am now trying to put it online. I have read about uploading the database and ftp the files, then change the settings.php for the new server, and run update.php. Then upload a php.ini file to overcome the infamous php limit. Everything seems to be successful, and can view the home page, but I can not log in or go to any other page. When I was fooling around with other ways of uploading, I installed a new install of 6.13 and saw that the server was not allowing clean url's. Could this be the problem? When I visit any other page i get: "The requested URL /node/1 was not found on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

Also the mamp site is in a subfolder of localhost, where as the production site will just be in the root. Don't know is this could be causing problems.

Thanks in advance for any advise!
