this is the future of this module: take users relations from social networking modules such as FriendList, then make node recommendations based on that.
it requires a total code re-write.

Sounds interesting. I hope you will support User Relationships as well, especially since that has a larger userbase than Friendlist, and works with a lot of other SN modules.

I just started tinkering around with Recommender API and I see a lot of potential around all the related modules.

If this module ever gets ported to D7, there is a somewhat similar module called User Relationship Locator ("People you may know") that you might want to look at for inspiration.
