theme installation

Hi, I am trying to install a theme, when i go to administrator to add the theme I get this error "warning: opendir(sites/all/themes/marinelli) [function.opendir]: failed to open dir: Permission denied in /var/www/includes/file.inc on line 888." even though I have set permissions (i tried a+rx -R, 666,anything i can think of) for that file/folder. Any suggestions?
