i am trying to get ul.menu to be "list-style: none"
i have added this to styles.css:
#sidebar-left ul.menu { list-style: none; }

when i check with Safari's Web Inspector, it shows that "list-style: none" is overridden by system-menus.css

Could you make sure that the style.css is called in the head ?
Also try list-style-type or list-style-image
