I know (from experience) that it is wise to switch off Poormanscron before sending a Simplenews Newsletter.
So a few weeks ago I switched off Poormanscron and gave the send command in Simplenews.
After that was apparently done I ran cron.php
Some newsletters (how much I do not know) apparently were send, but after 24 hours the Simplenews icon still indicated that it was not ready yet. The number of visitors on the site confirmed that impression: lower than usual.
So I gave another Cron.php
to discover after another 24 hours that it still wasnt finished. So I did Con.php again. Then after some time Simplenews told me it was finished. So in total I have given three cron commands.
Two weeks later I discovered that I had forgotten to switch Poormanscron back on, so I did.
The effect was that an unknown number, but surely a very large number did get the newsletter.... and apparently for the first time. Many of them got it though between 10 and 20 times so it is costing me some irritated readers as well.
I will not use Poormanscron anymore, but the behaviour of Cron is strange as well. Apparently both are unreliable. Are there any workarounds?
