I am contracted to build a website for a client and I'm considering Drupal. Is upgrading frome version to version required? I want to build on the existing version of Drupal and then never upgrade or change it. Is this possible? Are the modules that I use/include in the original build in danger of (one day) not being supported and/or not working anymore?

I am not a pro at this, but I would think that it depends on the terms of your contract. Any drupal website should have some minimum maintenance required over time, and that includes updating modules and the core.

Some modules may go out of use over time, but the major modules stay up-to-date and current.

I've seen the CRON area and so limiting the site to the CORE modules only may be a start and developing a maintenance schedule is also required.

yeah, you'll have to upgrade it approximately monthly because of security updates.

Drupal requires attention in the form of regular module upgrades and security updates. If you want a site that you never have to touch again I suggest you create a static HTML site and set up Contribute access for your client.

If you set up the site in Drupal and you don't patch eventually the site will get hacked and that wont be good for you as the contractor or your client.

Im running 6.1 version. Shouldnt I wait til version 7 comes out? rather than upgrading it every time a new release is out?

how long does upgrading take anyway?

You should upgrade every time because most (all?) of them are security updates.

It takes a little while:
