I need 5 of the latest from each taxonomy / category to show up in the 6-9 boxes there. Is this the right way to do it?

1. Make a layout in page.tpl, to get the below layout
2. Assign block names to the divs
3. Create views with only title in them, showing latest 5
4. Assign the views to the blocks.

But you might also take a look at Panels.... might be easier

Is there a one configuration, through which I can switch off long listing feed of latest articles in the home page. These are the posts from the normal layout. I do not need this since I have the panels in place.

Edit: Adding to the above, how do I make sure the panels appear only in the home page and not all the pages.
