My first classified ads site a craigslist clone at ziark.com

destinee13 - July 6, 2009 - 18:55

Hi all,
This is my first project a classified ads site and i thought i would share it with everyone. Since craigslist is the number one search term on google, i'd thought i would make a try to make a clone of it. Tell me what you think good or bad that would be great. There is a listing at california>los angeles>housing>apartments.

Mixed feelings

I think it's great that you're setting up a site similar to Craig's List; I think it's wrong to attempt to copy its look and feel. (Well, it's fine to do as a personal exercise... but as a public site? It rubs me the wrong way.)

You have so many design options with Drupal! Why not see how you can make it *better* than CL, rather than questionably trying to ride its (design) coattails?

An alternative design/look and feel

kiwifellows - November 30, 2009 - 23:27

Hi, Craigslist is popular, but the interface requires a lot of clicks to post an ad in your area. Also having a design that is simple and not overloading your users with information is always good.

Check out Lookforge free classifieds

This pretty much works out of the box with contrib modules. Only cutsomisation has been the theme and I got started using a theme called genesis which is a base theme which has great instructions for improving look and feel. OK it doesn't have all the categories that Craigs list does, but its a start because I wanted to keep it simple. And another consideration is that if you start a new website and people click on categories then they aren't going to get anything (I know I have this problem at the moment.)

it's just a test? are you trying to start a business, i saw the adsense, but would that be enough to make money?

and how on earth did you fill out all that taxonomy? with CSV files?

Hello socialtalker, Someday,

destinee13 - July 8, 2009 - 09:53

Hello socialtalker,
Someday, maybe i could start a business. This is just a project that i wanted to do. if it was possible to recreate craigslist with drupal. The adsense is just there taking up space. the taxonomy took me a little time because for what i wanted to do couldn't be done with csv files, so all of them where done manually.

Thanks Brad

I really like what you have accomplished. I am doing a Drupal installation on my server and want to know where do I start to tackle a simular project in Korean language.

Maybe you should

destinee13 - August 14, 2009 - 21:11

Hey L Harrison
thanks for the vote, drupal can do anything. I'm still building ziark classified ads. as far as where do you start, i don't know i learned drupal for scratch about a year and a half ago. i did the trial and error thing until i had it. taxonomy was the hardest thing to learn so the advise to you is maybe you should try classified ads the module.

sorry that i couldn't help you tackle a similar project because i don't know where you should start.

Classified Ads module

milesgillham - September 3, 2009 - 01:06

@Brad: I'm interested in learning from what you've done in terms of improvements for Classified Ads (ed_classified). What features could/should ed_classified have had that would have made the job easier? A nice thing about ed_classified is that it's based around the node type so should play nicely with pretty much every Drupal module.

Regards,

Miles

Great classifieds project. Did you setup a multi-site installation for each city? Would appreciate some insight on the setup you have.

Freakin Amazing!

I have been working on trying to figure out a good way to do classifieds...Drupal is awesome, but lacking in the classifieds ads module department. Joomla has a great ads mod that is pretty cool but I hate Joomla. I wont go back to Joomla but your website has definitely inspired me to keep going. I cant even begin to imagine all the work it took to make this.

Great job and if you could pass some insight along (like where to start) It would be greatly appreciated.

Some place to start

destinee13 - October 9, 2009 - 11:49

Thanks for the vote on my website, yes it did take some time to create. My biggest problem was getting to understand the inner working of Taxonomy and Drupal's core function (tpl). Once I understood why, what, where and how, it became pretty easy to see the end of my project. So maybe you should start there.

ballmdr - November 5, 2009 - 15:08

I think your website is the best of craigslist clone with drupal. But when I registered on your website. I cannot used my account for all subdomains.

Is user not share for the whole website?

If yes, your website is normally subdomain website. It's very easy to make.

SPAMMERS

destinee13 - November 11, 2009 - 12:40

Thanks for the vote: Sorry if we offended you, but that is one way for us to keep SPAM to a minimal. Spammers have taken over many classified ad website with their free rain to post to every category that they can log in. So this is one way of stopping that, unless you are a Spammer?

GraMur - November 10, 2009 - 01:15

That must have taken a great deal of time to do and the functionality of the site is just like cl. As you said, that is a work in progress, the one thing I don't fancy to much about CL is how it looks. If you can find a creative way to visually display all your information you will be well on your way. IMO.

That must have taken a great

destinee13 - November 30, 2009 - 11:32

Hello GraMur,
Thanks for the vote, Yes it has taken over a year and I'm still not done. I hope that one day we can generate enough money to hire some people, but for now it slow going.
