Essentially what I am trying to do is give users the ability to select from a single category (in this case, a list of different games) to search within when they search on the regular search block that appears on every page, without them having to first do a search, then open up the advanced search settings.

Is this doable as a custom block? I'm rather new at this, so would be nice to know I'm not trying to do something Drupal doesn't like!

I'm not advanced enough to give you all the instructions, but it does sound like a views based approach would help.
