If JS Optimizing is switched on, the text-area to write your message gets much to small.
This is only true for IE8 in with Compatibality View switched off.

berdirWe could not reproduce this with IE8, neither with compatibility mode nor without.
What you can do...
- Give us more information about your used theme, modules, custom CSS etc...
- Test it with another theme (garland, etc.)
- Provide screnshots
We do not add any css/js to that field on our own, so the same should happen on other textareas too...

berdirI noticed that we have a very small cols definition ('#cols' => 10) and so it is very small if JS is disabled. I removed that as part of my patch in #373124: Input Filter
