Installing Drupal different server package than local dev

Hi all --

I'm happily running five sites locally on a multi-site set-up using Apache2Triad and virtually named hosts. I really like Apache2Triad -- no problems on an XP machine, even with such modules as views, cck, panels...

So, here's the issue. Vlad, author of the A2T package, isn't updating it anymore. (I'm seeing folks at athe A2T forum helping each other with some very techy steps to update./integrate. I'm not a coder, although if push came to shove, I guess I could walk myself through it. ) I'm looking at this problem and thinking about the future.

I have a server that I have to upload one of my local Drupal sites to. Won't be multi-site. Have to go from xxx.xxx.localhost to xxx.xxx.edu
On that server, I have to install apache, mysql, etc. I was planning on using apache2triad so I could be going from local to live with the same package and same versions. I suppose I still could.

But, with no dev plans for A2Triad, I'm considering using a dif package on the live server.

***How much of a headache is it going to be for me to be using a dev site with A2Triad and server with another package, probably more recent versions. Using currently: MySQL database 5.0.18 / PHP 5.1.2/ Drupal 6.13

***Is it a pia to convert local to another package?

Any chat back would be welcome!

You may wish to consider using the acquia wamp stack-- they have a vested interested in providing something that is both current and integrates with drupal seamlessly.

TY for the suggestion, WF. I'll check it out.

You have any experience with the problems I think I'll be having (per post)?

I don't think you should see too many problems-- just be sure to clear the cache before backing up and migrating the database. Most of the time i've encountered problems it was because I was using subdirectories instead of subdomains or domains (ie site.com/drupal1 rather than drupal1.site.com).

Clear cache before backing

Clear cache before backing up? Haven't heard/read that one. Reason?

Reading aquia "stuff." So, what it boils down to is tech support for annual fee based on levels..based on # domains and servers... and a package that includes server, database and drupal.

You a happy user, I take it..

Drupal cache's information for faster presentation to anonymous viewers- which sometimes can cause problems when moving the site around. Clearing it just avoids that.

As for acquia-- the download itself is free afaik. You only pay if you want their additional services.
