As a further restriction against spammers etc, I'd like to add the field 'Contact phone number' to check the bonafide of new users.

I used a model a few years back on another site to add fields to user registration requirements, but I don't seem to be able to find it. Any ideas?

Additionally, how can one easily modify the login box to change the wording in it?

You can use the Core Profile module to add additional fields to the user profile and to set them as required for registering a new account.
