I have a huge section of my site organized with the article module. I'm not sure what I'd do with it if this vital module disappeared. Is there a plan to update it for 4.7? I saw nothing in CVS about it being under development.

Contact the author of the project, that's the best way to get an answer to your question. You could always offer a bounty for an upgrade patch.
