Description
Pardon my ignorance, but I'm unclear on why someone would choose to use Mailman rather than the built-in Drupal Notifications system with Listhandler / Mailhandler / MailToWeb.
Is an issue of volume of emails? What else am I missing?
Thanks.

If you use notifications then you get an email that says that some content is updated on the site. You must then visit the site to post a reply.
With mailman you can reply via email and, if mailhandler and listhandler and mailman are configured correctly, the inbound email can be added to the forum post as a comment.
Mailman also permits subscriptions via email which would be hard to achieve with forum+notifications alone.
It all depends on your requirements.
