I don't think it'll be good to support our own package file type long term. Instead, my goal is to consider and implement Features integration so there's a Features menu during installation from which users may select the available Features to be installed on the site.

This issue is 1 year old and with D7 and Drupal Commerce around the corner there won't be any other effort on this issue.
