Overriding Authenticated User Permissions

How can I disable a permission for a new role if "Authenticated user" role has the permission authorized?
I want authenticated users to be able to change their user names, but I do not want my new "Author User" role members to be able to change theirs — even though they are authenticated as well.
Please let me know if anyone has an answer to this problem.
