Import Data Translation

We receive CSV member lists from our national organization where the State field is written as a 2 letter abbreviation (e.g. AL, AK, etc.). i would prefer to have the full name of the state in the user profile (e.g. Alabama, Alaska, etc.). Would it be possible to have User Import translate this data on import?

Perhaps a methodology would be using a text equivalency file where each line is a matched pair:
AL:Alabama
AK:Alaska
AZ:Arizona
etc.

If anyone has thought on how to implement such that would be great, or is there a module or other way to translate the data after import perhaps using a trigger?
