If you install the imceimage field and create a content type to be referenced:
http://drupal.org/project/imceimage

Then add a node reference with create/ref capabilities to this content type.

When you click "add image" it tries to take you to another page/tab instead of opening the imce popup image...probably some javascript/jquery magic needed :)

Transfering to the issues queue of the IMCE CCK Image module, as it doesn't properly use Drupal javascript behaviors nor jQuery to manipulate the DOM.
