Drupal requires: PHP, a webserver (eg Apache, IIS) and a database server (eg MySQL). The underlying OS is largely irrelevant as long as these are there, unless you have very specific demands.

However it leaves me in doubt about a few things.
What does PHP mean?
Assuming that the web sites for which I'll be using Drupal are hosted on a typical contemporary webserver with MySQL or equivalent .... whatever PHP is, must it also be present on that webserver, or must it be present on the computer I use at home to prepare web content?
Can I download the Drupal to my XP box and use it to create and manage web content (which of course will reside on a webserver elsewhere? That is to say, does the "underlying OS" comment above refer to the machine from which web pages are being served, to the machine whereon I create content, or both?
Is that a stupid question? Does Drupal only reside on the server? Is it used as a web application or does at least part of it reside with me?
What, if anything do I need to have on my own computer (OS? a copy of Drupal? PHP? MySQL? something else?) in order to use Drupal to create and manage content on the webserver I subscribe to?
I realize these are basic questions. If this is not a community where the technically naive are welcome please say so. A long time ago I created a few web sites using strictly HTML composed in Notepad. I'm looking for up-to-date tools with which to return to the web.
