I'm choosing a host for a new Drupal site with humble ecommerce needs <$5K per month.

Should I bite for the VPS or go with a less intense host and do third-party ecommerce?

Drupal hosting needs is based on traffic not the revenue :). If your traffic is less than 200ip/day, i think shared hosting should be good enough.

I would definitely start out with a shared solution, you should be able to get away with it no problem. If you start to see signs of trouble, be proactive and look for the next step.
