Basically, a request for this code to be forward ported: http://drupal.org/cvs?commit=182994
Attached is a straight patch moving the code into the new places, but it may nee dot be optimised/fixed.
PS with the latest 2.x-dev, there is an error message when a tribune node is visited by an anonymous user:

Just a comment - should the favicon also be changed on pages where the block is shown? I think it should only be for the main tribune (node) page(s).
