This looks like an awesome module to extend my Drupal site. However, I still use Drupal 5.x, due to some custom made modules which aren't compatible with Drupal 6.x.

Do you plan to do a backport to Drupal 5.x in the near future?

No, Drupal 5 is no longer being developed even in FileField, and it would require a significant amount of effort to make this possible on D5, since the Drupal 6 version of FileField was completely rewritten to make such functionality possible.
