SimplePie 1.2 was released recently; this feature request is a place for us to track (discuss/subscribe) how things are going for upgrading the library to SimplePie 1.2.

Duh - I made the above comment just after installing the module. It seems that the module is already version-agnostic, as we have to install the simplepie.inc file ourselves.
