siteground disables update_status module on their shared hosting servers
I recently noticed that siteground.com is disabling the update_status module from my drupal installation I run on their hosting servers.
This is what they reply when you ask for clarification:
...The issue you experienced ['white page'] is caused by the update module for Drupal. Here is what happens when you try to access the admin backend.
1. The Update module tries to connect to all web sites listed as update locations for your installed modules and the Drupal installation itself.
2. It is common that one or more of those web sites are not accessible at that point (or are replying too slow). Most commonly it is an issue with third party scripts.
3. The Update modules tries to retrieve the information and since it does not succeed in more than 10 seconds - the scripts times out - a blank page is displayed.
The resolution for our shared hosting servers is to disabled the Update module so your Drupal administrator backend will load without any troubles. If we do not disable the script and its execution takes more than 10 seconds the page will result as blank page at your back end.
In case you need this module you should consider upgrading your account to a dedicated solution ...
and
Unfortunately we can not raise the apache timeout limit for our shared hosting servers due to the fact that this will cause performance and security issues for the server. At the moment our servers are optimized for best performance level by our system administrators.
Thank you for your understanding ...
Is what they are saying correct?
As I know, update_status only checks updates at drupal.org [not 'all web sites listed as update locations...' ].
Also, I know update_status never gave to me such issues in the past ...
Any thoughts ?

Looks like you use Drupal 5.x
Looks like you use Drupal 5.x now.
According to the description in the module, it will only check Drupal.org site, no others.
if this is disabled, you can consider run it manually. This actually not a big burden on maintenance.
