When I enable this module, the field for editing the signature (should normally show in the User -> Edit form) is gone!
What is happening here!?

Have you enabled any content types under Administer -> Site configuration -> Signatures for Forums ? That's the most likely reason. :)

Thanks for updating the issue. I think this truly is a bug though, since it must be confusing for new users to find signatures are disabled for everything by default.
This can therefore become a bug report to make signatures enabled by default on all content types.
